Discussion Q's

Discussion Questions for Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Hey everyone! So I did things a little differently this time with the discussion questions.  Instead of writing them all myself as I usually do, I wrote a couple and found the rest on the internet.  The first four are the ones I wrote, numbers 5-7 are from a post on Goodreads, and the last 4 are from the questions provided by the publisher.  Hope these help your book club have some great discussions!

  1. If you could only use one word to describe each character in this book, what would it be? Would the word you chose have changed by the end of the book?
  2. Did the fact that this book is set in the 70’s cause you any confusion or disconnect?
  3. The book tended to shift focus from one character to another within a paragraph or two.  Did this ever cause any confusion?
  4. Would you rather be Lydia, the center of attention but with a lot of pressure from your parents, or Nath, forgotten and eclipsed by Lydia but free to do your own thing?
  5. Do you think James would have eventually cheated on Marilyn even if Lydia hadn’t died? Was Lydia the only thing holding their marriage and family together?
  6. When Lydia stepped off the boat into the water, do you think she expected or wanted to drown? Were you satisfied with the explanation of Lydia’s death or did you want/expect something different?
  7. The book mentioned at one point that Marilyn and James had few friends as adults. Why do you think they never made an effort to find friends?  Do you think their reasons for not making adult friends differ for each of them?
  8. Which characters do you think the title of this book refers to? Why?
  9. Why do you think Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James?
  10. This novel says a lot about the influence our parents can have on us. Do you think the same issues will affect the next generation of Lees?
  11. What do you think would have happened had Lydia reached the dock? Do you think she would’ve been able to change her parents’ views/expectations of her?
